Matrix of Disciplines for the Chalmers University of Technology
Matrix of Products for Industrial Design Engineering

The graduate programme ‘Industrial Design Engineering’ at Chalmers is based on engineering, industrial design knowledge & skills, and the relation between humans and technology[1].

In the first year engineering and ergonomics courses make up the greatest part of the programme, but also included are courses in brand identity, safety, and form giving[2].

For the second year there are offerings of either a broad programme, based on engineering, manufacturing, and management[3], or specializations which focus on either automotive IDE, cognitive & physical ergonomics, or design problems & formgiving[4].

There is no explicit mention of what is designed within IDE at Chalmers, but their conception seems very similar to that of the Delft University of Technology, focussing on tangible consumer products.

Another graduate programme, called ‘Product Development’, is based on engineering and business and shows a greater focus on product development methodologies than IDE does.

They discern four core aspects to product development: ‘Integrated Product Development’, ‘Advanced Computer Aided Design’, ‘Product Planning and Market Analysis’, and ‘Product Life Cycle Management’[5].

Specialisation tracks focus on either technology or business, where the technology track focuses on tangible products and the business track includes services and systems.

Product design research at the CUT is divided into ‘Design & Human Factors’, ‘Product Development’, and ‘Production Systems’, with their largest customers in the vehicle and manufacturing industries[6].
